Air Conditioning Installation in Ferndale, MI
New and replacement central air, matched to the furnace it has to share ductwork with.
Replacing central air is rarely just the box outside. The condenser and the indoor coil are a matched pair, and both of them depend on ductwork that was often installed for a different house than the one standing today.
What this covers
- Central air conditioning replacement, condenser and matched evaporator coil
- Adding central air to a house that has forced-air heat but no cooling
- Line-set replacement or flush when converting between refrigerant types
- Correct sizing based on the house rather than the outgoing unit
- Condensate drainage and pad or bracket work at the outdoor unit
- Return-air corrections where the existing system cannot supply the airflow
When replacement is the right call
- The system is past fifteen years and has developed a refrigerant leak.
- It runs on R-22 and needs a significant recharge.
- The compressor has failed on a unit old enough that the rest of it is close behind.
- The house has been extended or the attic finished, and the existing unit was never sized for it.
- You are already replacing the furnace, which is the cheapest moment to replace the coil that sits on top of it.
Matched systems, and why the indoor half matters
A condenser outside and an evaporator coil inside are engineered as a pair. Putting a new high-efficiency condenser on top of a fifteen-year-old coil does not give you the efficiency printed on the new unit's label, and in some pairings it does not give you reliable operation either. If the quote you are looking at replaces only the outdoor unit, it is worth asking specifically what happens to the coil.
Sizing follows the same logic as furnaces, with the same common error. Bigger is not better. An oversized air conditioner cools the air quickly, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off before it has pulled any real moisture out of the house. The result is a house that is cold and clammy at the same time, which is a worse outcome than one that is slightly warm. In a Michigan July, dehumidification is doing half the work.
The third thing worth checking before anyone orders equipment is whether the ductwork can carry the air. Cooling needs more airflow than heating does. A duct system that was adequate for a furnace can be undersized for the cooling load, and that is a much better thing to find out during the quote than during the first heatwave.

AC installation: common questions
Can I replace just the outdoor unit?
Sometimes, but it should be a deliberate decision rather than a default. The outdoor condenser and the indoor evaporator coil are a matched set. Pairing a new condenser with an old coil can cost you the efficiency you paid for, and if the two are meaningfully mismatched it can cost you reliability. If a quote covers only the outdoor unit, ask what it assumes about the coil.
Can I add central air to a house that does not have it?
If the house already has forced-air heat, usually yes, because the ductwork is the expensive part and it is already there. The questions are whether the existing ducts can carry the higher airflow that cooling needs, where the condenser can sit, and how the refrigerant lines and condensate drain route. If the house is heated by radiators with no ductwork at all, that is a much larger project.
What size air conditioner do I need?
It comes from a load calculation, not from the size of the old unit. Oversizing is the most common error and it produces a specific, recognisable complaint: the house gets cold fast but feels damp, because the system shuts off before it has removed any humidity.
When is the best time to replace an air conditioner?
Spring or early autumn, for the same reason it is better to replace a furnace in September than in January. Replacing equipment on a scheduled basis, before it fails, means you are choosing calmly rather than deciding in a hot house with the phone ringing.
